Brief Background

The key purpose of Wan Chai Development Phase II (WDII) is to provide land at Wan Chai North and North Point for construction of te Central-Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link (CWB). Land formed under the project will be developed as a world-class waterfront promenade joining that at the new Central waterfront for public enjoyment.

There is a compelling and present need for the CWB to provide relief to the very congested east-west Connaught Road Central/Harcourt Road / Glourcester Road Corridor (the Corridor) which is currently operating beyond its capacity. The CWB will provide relief to the existing congestion along the Corridor and cater for the anticipated growth of traffic on Hong Kong Island. Without the CWB and its access roads, these will not be sufficient capacity to serve the heavy traffic demands as both strategic and local levels.
